I have a question I want to put forth into the Universe. Is it worse to just end a relationship right out of the blue, or to set a date (unbeknownst to the other party) and end it then? For example, I have recently set a date and now instead of fighting with my significant other, I simply repeat “Six more months, and then no more.” and I feel much better. The anger/frustration is still there, but it is mollified knowing that soon, most likely no matter what happens, I will be alone again. Still, people seem to be pretty back and forth on this particular subject.

The arguments I have heard follow a little something like this:

1) “No it is not worse, because it gives you time to think… you might not even wanna break up after six months”

2) “Yes it is, because you are treating the other person like a poor career choice, or a Dr.’s appointment.”

3) “No, because fuck that guy you’re with, someone might as well have some control of the relationship, and it might as well be you.”

4) “Yes, because if you set a date, you stop trying in the relationship. You give up and just hold out until whenever you decide its over, so the relationship is dead way before you guys ever split up.”

And, of course, number five….

5) “You have to pick if you are doing this because you want to break up with him, or you don’t. This kind of thing only comes about when someone it trying to do one or the other, and if you choose incorrectly you could be stuck with someone you hate or lose someone you love.”

What do you guys think? May 3, 2011 is my date.
